Who's your most favorite National Artist Awardee? This is how we, STECians looked like together with our idols.
I've chosen the infamous Leandro V. Licson to represent my most favorite National Artist Awardee, because of his significant contributions on our contemporary arts society. In fact Leandro V. Locsin reshaped the urban landscape with a distinctive architecture reflective of Philippine Art and Culture. He believes that the true Philippine Architecture is “the product of two great streams of culture, the oriental and the occidental… to produce a new object of profound harmony.” It is this synthesis that underlies all his works, with his achievements in concrete reflecting his mastery of space and scale. Every Locsin Building is an original, and identifiable as a Locsin with themes of floating volume, the duality of light and heavy, buoyant and massive running in his major works. From 1955 to 1994, Locsin has produced 75 residences and 88 buildings, including 11 churches and chapels, 23 public buildings, 48 commercial buildings, six major hotels, and an airport terminal building.
These significant contribution he made, also with the help of the Marcos' Regime, is what makes me proud of him, proud of my nation's artistry, and also, as an aspiring engineer, I dream to build a nation with efficient and clean energy, as well as invest on natural and energy-efficient, yet high-technology infrastructures. - Jose Virgilio G. Calambuhay
I chose Lucresia Roces Kasilag because I really admired her for being a composer and pianist, something I know I can't be. She is very remarkable because she had many contributions in developing our Philippine music such as incorporating traditional indigenous instruments into orchestral productions. She also became the head of many corporations and organizations such as the Cultural Center of the Philippines and founded the Bayanihan Folks Arts Center. - Jessa Dione Ramirez
I chose Bienvenido Lumbera because he introduce Tagalog literature and has helped to change the vernacular poetic tradition. He has also contributed to the strengthening of what is Filipino in Filipino culture. Lumbera has not only significantly affected Philippine culture. He has contributed to the formation of truly Filipino culture. - Thirdy Cosep Dabalos
- Leizl Anne Pozon
I chose Leandro Locsin as a split half of my personality because just like him, I also want to indulge myself in Engineering. He is an Architect and Architecture has a lot to do with Engineering knowing it is related at some fields. I also want to construct buldings and one day I also want to be accredited as the Engineer who built a well-known infrastracture in the future. - Angelo Jhann Salas
Lina brocka is regarded as the most influential director/filmaker of the Philippines. He became known even in the international community due to his movies depicting the Marcos Dictatorship. For me, he is an idol to look upto being a filipino director whose films span to a worldwide audience. - Jerel John Velarde
I chose Ramon Pagayon Santos as my split half portrait. To give a few background in what particular field he was awarded, he was awarded as a National Artist for Music in 2014. He is a Filipino composer, musicologist, and ethnomusicologist. "Ethnomusicoligist" or to simply put, the study of music on its cultural context. I simply admire him for that for he does not take on the Western countries style of music and is richly enhancing is compositional outlook. He was also known for his famous "Panaghoy" where it is a powerful musical discourse for a fallen leader, Benigno Aquino Jr. - France Anthony Navarro
